📌 Editor’s notes 📌:
It’s the 4th anniversary of ‘Cannabinoids & the People’ on Substack. Now, the traditional gift for the 4th anniversary is fruit & flowers, but the modern gift is electrical appliances. So what I want more than anything in the world is an electric vegetable slicer.
In celebration, I did a re-formatting of this newsletter to make it more accessible for you & after a meeting with the social media maven Rachel Colic (highly recommended), I’m going to focus more this year on building up my YouTube channel with longer, horizontal videos filmed against the backdrop of my office. The deeper dives suit my style & I’m looking forward to experimenting more on covering topics close to my heart, such as this one on making all drugs illegal.
Survey:
(you can just reply to this email if you’re reading from Substack, or DM me on LinkedIn. And partial answers are more helpful than no answers. I’m just trying to make this newsletter as useful as possible)
For my questions, the main one is: What’s helpful about this newsletter to you & how do you use it?
- Does anything bug you about it? Especially user interface. I’m trying to make it as easy to quickly parse as I possibly can, while still being my completionist self.
- Are there any areas of coverage related to these that you’d like to hear more on?
- Would hashtags help in the “This Week” section at the top so you can quickly find the article referenced below?
Thanks.
I appreciate all of you following along with this unwieldy whale of a newsletter. I feel lucky that I get to put it together, set it adrift each week & let it land where it might. Around 2,000 of you open it each week & at least run your eye down it. There might even be some obsessive soul out there who goes through each issue cover to cover. And I wanted to say to all of you, thanks for reading it & making it worth it.

“This is not just a movie plot, although it is exactly what happens in Maria Full of Grace, the 2004 film that brought global attention to the role of female drug mules. It is also real life for countless women across Latin America and beyond. Women who are in vulnerable situations: poor, young, isolated, are often targeted by traffickers who know how to exploit desperation. … But once these women are caught, their stories often vanish. In the courtroom, they are no longer seen as desperate or coerced. Instead, they are framed as either careless or cunning, naïve victims who should’ve known better or cold operators who knew exactly what they were doing.”

PS: For this week’s Delta blues, ‘Parchman Farm’, a collection of recordings from the late ‘30s by Bukka White. Born in Mississippi in ~1906, Bukka learned fiddle tunes from his father but once he started playing the guitar, his grandmother didn’t like hearing “that Devil music” in the house (though the music must have been in the blood, because his cousin was BB King). In 1930, a talent scout for Victor recorded 14 of White’s songs but only released 4 of them. With the Great Depression setting in, he didn’t get another chance to record until Big Bill Broonzy invited him to come to Chicago & record for Lester Melrose. But White was in legal trouble for shooting someone in the thigh (he claimed it was self-defense after his friend was ambushed along the highway). He jumped bail & headed to Chicago where he managed to record 2 side before being caught & returned to Mississippi for a 3-year sentence at Parchman Farm.
While he was inside, his song ‘Shake ‘Em Down’ became a hit. Plus, he recorded two songs for the Lomaxes, the famed folklorists who were touring prisons & recording for the Library of Congress. When White got out, he recorded 12 songs for Melrose & these were considered the pinnacle of his recording career, many going on to become classics of the Delta blues. But then, with World War 2 beginning, he started working in a factory & disappeared from public view.
In 1962, when Bob Dylan covered ‘Fixin’ to Die Blues’ on his debut album, blues enthusiasts tracked Bukka White down & he quickly recorded 3 albums of material. Despite being an aging patriarch of the Delta blues, he was a stylish dresser in excellent health who well-enjoyed the folk festival & coffeehouse circuit of the 1960s, where he shared his stories as well as his songs. He stayed on the circuit until his death of cancer at the age of ~71.
