Sponsor: PlusCBD & a commitment to quality
I’m proud to promote the CBD-rich hemp extracts of PlusCBD because I know from the inside about their commitment to quality.
They start with agricultural non-GMO hemp grown with no pesticides: only water, soil & sunlight.
Then they use the clean, safe method CO2 extraction to get out all of the terpenes, minor cannabinoids & fatty acids that go into a quality hemp extract.
And finally they test their products at least 3 times internally & once externally by third-party labs before it ever goes out the doors.
The result is an excellent CBD-rich hemp extract product that changes people’s lives.

#Anxiety
In a large trial of people with anxiety, 15 weeks of nano-CBD significantly improved anxiety scores as well as depression & sleep quality
Evaluation of the efficacy, safety, and pharmacokinetics of nanodispersible cannabidiol oral solution (150 mg/mL) versus placebo in mild to moderate anxiety subjects: A double blind multicenter randomized clinical trial
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38797087/
In this multi-center clinical trial across India, they enrolled 178 people with anxiety disorders. For 12 weeks, the participants received from 300 to 600 mg of nanodispersible CBD (which has a somewhat higher bioavailability). For their two primary endpoints for measuring anxiety (the General Anxiety Disorder-7 Scale and the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale), the scores decreased gradually over the course of the study. On their secondary measurements of depression and sleep quality, the participants also saw significant improvements. For safety, there were no serious adverse events. As the researchers concluded, “These findings align with the growing body of evidence indicating that CBD may have anxiolytic effects if administered for a longer duration, ranging from 4 to 12 weeks.” For more research, see the Anxiety, Stress & Depression page of CVResearch.info.
#Hangover?
In insomnia patients using oral cannabis products at night, there was a “notable” lack of next-day impairment
Evaluating possible 'next day' impairment in insomnia patients administered an oral medicinal cannabis product by night: a pilot randomized controlled trial
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38758300/
In this quite practical placebo-controlled trial, researchers wanted to see if using THC and CBD to treat insomnia would lead to impairment the next day. In the 20 adults with physician-diagnosed insomnia, they were given either a placebo or a pill with 10 milligrams of THC and 200 milligrams of CBD. The next morning, they were given 28 different tests of cognitive and psychomotor function including a simulated driving performance. On 27 of those tests, no performance differences were found relative to the placebo. The only effect was a small decrease in accuracy on the Stroop-color task (which is easier than the Stroop-word task, where they had no differences). After 10 hours, people who had taken the THC/CBD combo also had a small increase in their likelihood of rating themselves as ‘sedated’. But other than that, “we found a lack of notable 'next day' impairment to cognitive and psychomotor function and simulated driving performance” after the evening use of THC and CBD.

On the medical cannabis preferences of older adults
Medical Cannabis for Patients Over Age 50: A Multi-site, Prospective Study of Patterns of Use and Health Outcomes
https://www.researchgate.net/publication/380623953_Medical_Cannabis_for_Patients_Over_Age_50_A_Multi-site_Prospective_Study_of_Patterns_of_Use_and_Health_Outcomes
In this observational study across multiple sites in Canada, almost 300 participants over the age of 50 were asked about their use of medical cannabis over the course of 6 months. Over 90% of them used cannabis to treat pain-related conditions like chronic pain or arthritis. Surprisingly, almost all the patients reported preferring oral products over inhalation products, most especially oral formulations high in CBD and low in THC. Over the six months of the study, the participants reported significant improvements in their pain, sleep, and quality of life measures. As well, 45% saw a clinically meaningful improvement in pain and sleep quality scores. “The most notable improvements over study visits were observed in the domains of ability to complete usual activities, pain/discomfort, and anxiety/depression over the course of the study, characterized by increasing proportions of individuals in the least severe category (level 1).” Also, of the patients taking other medications, nearly half of them had reduced their use by the end of the study (the most common drug category to reduce was pain medications. See Table 4). The average decrease in pharmaceutical costs per month was ~60%. And most importantly, no serious adverse events were reported. Of the 13 non-serious adverse events, the majority were the standards of dizziness, drowsiness, and nausea.
Also, of interest in these economic times, the cost per quality-adjusted life-year (QALY - a technical public health measurement equating to one year of life in perfect health) was $25,000, significantly lower than traditional pharmaceuticals. In conclusion, if you’re over 50, THC and CBD are two of the cheapest ways to buy a longer, fuller healthier life. Basically, it’s the cannabinoid equivalent of this beloved advertisement.

An evergreen note on reading restricted papers:
First stop for seeing if there’s a free version of a paper, use the Google Scholar Chrome extension (Mac version), Google Scholar itself or try ResearchGate.
Three other helpful browser extensions are: Unpaywall, Open Access Button & PaperPanda
For the infamous backdoor, use Sci-Hub – the pirated papers repository (Chrome extension here). This works better for older paper than the stuff that just came out.
Finally, email the author. They’re almost always happy to oblige because, thanks to the predatory academic publishing system, they don’t make a dollar off of their papers.
