PS: For Fariña week, the simply splendid album he did with his wife Mimi called ‘Celebrations For A Grey Day’ (1965). Richard Fariña’s life of promise was cut short by tragedy. A Brookyln boy with a mother from Ireland & a father from Cuba, he started at Cornell as an engineering major before switching to English & writing for local literary magazines & even some national players. But then he was kicked out of school for being in a student demonstration. They eventually let him back in, but he dropped out right before graduation.
Instead, he began his ascent of the Greenwich Village folk scene by hanging out at the legendary White Horse Tavern. He became friends with Bob Dylan after the then little-known musician played harmonica on an album by Fariña’s first wife, Carolyn Hester. During a trip to Europe, he met Mimi Baez, the kid sister of Joan Baez. His first wife soon divorced him & he married Mimi. Their best man was Thomas Pynchon. Mimi & Richard played their first musical gig together at the Big Sur Folk Festival in 1964 & scored a contract with Vanguard Records that resulted in this album.
But these days, he’s best known for his novel referenced higher in the newsletter, ‘Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up to Me’, as much a protest novel as his music was protest music. Two days after the novel came out & on his wife’s 21st birthday, Richard was coming home from a book signing as a passenger on a motorcycle going far too fast & it went out of control & into a field. The driver survived but Fariña died instantly. As Ed Ward said, "If Richard had survived that motorcycle accident, he would have easily given Dylan a run for his money." Instead, he was buried under a simple grave with just his name & a peace sign.
This newsletter is the backbone of my work & I hope it brings you a measure of value. If so, please consider upgrading to a paid subscription & support my sharing all of the new cannabinoid science each week.
