Hello everyone,
Welcome to the 118th edition of Cannabinoids & the People, Lex Pelger’s free weekly digest of all the new cannabinoid science + assorted canna-news & psychedelic updates. Upgrade to a paid subscription here to support my work sharing canna-science. On the cannabinoids, ask me anything.
Editor’s notes:
Late this week because my mother-in-law was in the hospital with breathing problems. Prayers appreciated.
Thanks to our new sponsor: the 7th CB1, CB2 & Cannabinoid Drug Development Summit, happening in Boston on Nov 18-20th. I went to the first two conferences & they were great. I would’ve kept going except… kids.
In addition, I’m still looking for a full-time major sponsor for this newsletter - but there’s been some nibbles & I’m reaching out places.
I also wanted to highlight the smaller, mid-level sponsorship spot that will live right below ‘Best of Canna-Science’ & above ‘Fav Headlines’. They’re a good deal for smaller canna-ancillary businesses looking for new clients. And I’ll offer free spots to NGOs & non-profits doing the Good Work. Just reply to this email if working with this newsletter interests you.
Sponsor: The 7th CB1, CB2 & Cannabinoid Drug Development Summit (Boston Nov 18th – 20th)
The 7th CB1, CB2 & Cannabinoid Drug Development Summit is returning as the industry-focused scientific event prioritizing overcoming the translational challenges for drug developers.
The 2024 event program features 18+ industry leading speakers, hot data readouts from emerging biotechs, and a comprehensive lineup of expert speakers working on the next generation of cannabinoid and ECS-targeting therapeutics.
View the event guide for the full 3-day industry-focused program:
https://ter.li/xxv5z2
Don’t miss out on the chance to join 60+ preclinical, translational, and clinical scientists from the likes of Jazz Pharmaceuticals, NeuroTherapia, Roche, RespireRX Pharmaceuticals, GB Sciences, Neuropathix, Artelo Biosciences, Avecho Biotechnology, and more, as they seek to discover and develop more cannabinoid-based drugs and ECS-targeting therapies.
And I will personally add that I found the first two conferences I attended to be fascinating. A great range of speakers & topics – and most of all, an excellent place for networking with other people focused on cannabinoid drug development.
You can use the special discount code C&P10 to get 10% off your conference pass:

‘to be cool’ leading the pack…
On the many pathways of 2-AG synthesis
From Classical to Alternative Pathways of 2-Arachidonoylglycerol Synthesis: AlterAGs at the Crossroad of Endocannabinoid and Lysophospholipid Signaling
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39125098/
In the ‘neural ocean’ metaphor I use for my cannabinoid graphic novels based on Moby Dick, the endocannabinoid 2-AG is a blue whale.
Furthermore, I think that these lysophospholipids (LPLs) that they work with are some kind of oarfish - because those LPLs are a group of second messengers & the Japanese call the oarfish “the messenger from the sea god's palace” for their purported ability to portend earthquakes when they show up in the water or on the beaches.
So, per this study, I can’t wait to illustrate 2-AG synthesis by creating an orgy of blue whales & oarfish complete with extracellular cleavages & titillating regioisomerisms.
(I asked ChatGPT to draw a blue whale/oarfish orgy but it didn’t want to “veer into inappropriate imagery”. Coward.)

For CBC, the (-)- enantiomer activated the CB2 receptor but not the (+)- enantiomer
Activation of CB2 Receptors by (-)-Cannabichromene but Not (+)-Cannabichromene
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39137108/
Enantiomers are like your left and right hands—identical in shape but mirror images that can’t be superimposed on each other. Just as a left glove won’t fit a right hand, enantiomers can interact very differently with other molecules, even though they have the same atoms. For example, the drug thalidomide had two enantiomers: one treated morning sickness, while the other caused severe birth defects like "flipper" babies in the 1950s and 60s.
So in the ‘neural ocean’ metaphor I use for my cannabinoid graphic novels based on Moby Dick, CBC is a Sri Lankan elephant. Little, sweet, not as well-known as it should be.
And the CB2 receptor is a gay bar in the walls of the neural cities.
So basically this study shows that left-tusked Sri Lankan elephants do well at the gay bar but right-tusked ones do not.
