The effects of standardized cannabis products in healthy volunteers and patients: a systematic literature review
https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/pharmacology/articles/10.3389/fphar.2024.1411631/abstract
“Results demonstrate that cannabis administration to healthy volunteers induces dose-dependent acute effects, such as rapidly rising THC and CBD blood concentrations, the subjective experience of high and anxiety, slower reaction time and impaired attention, learning and working memory. Patient studies suggest that treatment with medicinal cannabis reduces pain intensity across a broad range of chronic pain-related medical conditions. Medicinal cannabis showed a mild safety profile, with minor and transient side effects, such as feeling high, coughing and mental confusion.”

https://bmcpsychiatry.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12888-024-06075-6
“Majority of patients received antipsychotic (98.7%) followed by the combination of antipsychotics with benzodiazepines (34.5.%), antipsychotics with antidepressants (14.4%) and antipsychotics treatment with antidepressants and benzodiazepines (25.9%). Only few patients received antipsychotic monotherapy (17.9%). Risperidone was the most frequently prescribed antipsychotics (83.6%). Mean equivalence dose of risperidone was 8.0 ± 5.9 mg/day. The average hospital length of stay was 28 days (range 22-31).”

“During the 18-month period, approximately 646,391 consumers purchased 1,939,172 products and 431 AEs were reported by 304 individuals. The estimated percentage of consumers who reported at least one adverse event was 0.05%. The percentage of AEs per products sold was 0.02%. Most AEs (98.14%) reported were Grade 1 (i.e., asymptomatic or causing mild symptoms), as classified by the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events. Seven AEs were classified as serious, and the percentage of SAEs per products sold was 0.0004%.”

“According to nearly every law enforcement officer interviewed, criminal entities continue to abuse this unique system [Canada’s production registration process] by obtaining licences under false premises and diverting surplus product into the illicit market. Second, while the domestic market for illicit cannabis has likely declined, many interviewees claimed that organized crime groups adjusted operations by maintaining production levels and diverting shipments into the United States, and also by exploiting relationships with some Indigenous communities. This has contributed to deteriorating public health and safety outcomes within some Indigenous communities. Finally, we registered the belief of many interviewees that the most sophisticated criminal groups have begun shifting attention toward opiate production and distribution – potentially in response to both a smaller domestic market for cannabis, and also the skyrocketing demand for opioids.”

PS: I can’t believe I haven’t yet covered his Vocal Holiness, the ‘Father of Country Music’ & yodeling king Jimmie Rodgers. Here’s his wonderfully titled 1927 album ‘You Want Jimmie Rodgers. Well, Here He Is!’. The son of a railroad worker in Meridian, Mississippi, he was known as the ‘The Singing Brakeman’ & ‘America's Blue Yodeler’. At the age of 13, he won a singing content & traveled through the US South with a medicine show (these troupes were hired by early medicine companies to sell patent medicines that often contained opium, alcohol & cannabis by offering a mix of entertainment & salesmanship, giving career opportunities to many of the early greats of Americana music). When he returned to Meridian at 14, he began working as a railroad brakeman & stayed there ten years until a lung hemorrhage from his tuberculosis forced him off the rails & into the music business. Using the many influences of his youth, he brought together hillbilly country, gospel, jazz, blues, pop, cowboy & folk music to create his distinctive style with a voice as wide-ranging as any instrument.
But after an argument with his band about how to be billed, he recorded solo with an RCA talent scout & his song ‘Blue Yodel No 1 (T For Texas)’ became one of the only early country songs to sell a million records. By 1929, Rodgers was a major star with sold-out concerts, hit records & a short film called ‘The Singing Brakeman’. But this is also the year with the great stock market crash that began the Great Depression & despite his declining health, Rodgers worked with Will Rogers on several fundraising tours for the Red Cross to help those suffering. By 1931, the economy dramatically decreased his income but he continued to record. With family money running short, he played anywhere to make ends meet including vaudeville shows & nickelodeons. But when he collapsed on a radio show in San Antonio, he realized he was close to death. He scheduled one more recording session to provide some more financial support for his family & sang from a hospital cot accompanied by a nurse. Two days later he was dead of lung hemorrhage. The train that carried his body home blew its whistle for the entire journey & thousands came to pay their respect (it’s not often that I tear up as I write these). An inspiration to a legion of musicians who followed, he became the first artist inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame & as a founding father in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Here you can hear his 145 recordings for RCA, where at the time of his death, he represented 10% of the company’s total record sales. Here’s to you Jimmie!
