Hello everyone,
Welcome to the 124th edition of Cannabinoids & the People, Lex Pelger’s free weekly digest of all the new cannabinoid science + assorted canna-news & psychedelic updates. Upgrade to a paid subscription here to support my work sharing canna-science. On the cannabinoids, ask me anything.
Editor’s notes:
Welcome to our first new regular Monday delivery. And the first time since this summer that I’m all the way caught up with my Google Scholar Alerts (it’s up to ~90 emails & ~300 papers per week that I’m going through. The things I do for you…).
Also, I’m still looking for a partner to be a full-time sponsor for this newsletter – but in the meantime, it looks like some European cannabis conferences will be sponsoring & giving me a press pass to come & cover their gatherings. So Papa Lex will be hitting the road…
Lastly, most of all, I want to host a cannabis podcast for a great company. Let me know if that might be you or someone you know.

In people with epilepsy, we can now determine which genetic variant of the FAAH enzyme they have based on their EEG signal
Automatic classification of fatty acid amide hydrolase polymorphism genotype based on EEG signal
https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00500-024-10306-z
“Because the FAAH controls the endocannabinoids levels by hydrolyzing and terminating the activity of the anandamide within the central nervous system (CNS) and also the origin of seizures which is the electrical storm of brain neurons, it is thought that there can be a relation between the FAAH enzyme and the brain oscillations. Identifying genotypes that are related to EEG variation in epilepsy is crucial for clinical epilepsy monitoring and controlling brain oscillations. In this paper, we show the FAAH rs2295633 polymorphism can be detected (classified) using EEG signals (as a common diagnostic tool) following the convolutional neural network (CNN) classification method. “

PS: For today’s album out of Africa, ‘Celestine Ukwu & His Philosophers National’. The beloved Nigerian musician lost too young, Celestine Ukwu played Igbo highlife music during the ‘60s & ‘70s. Learning from his musical parents & traveling with his choirmaster uncle, Ukwu grew up in music & only spent a few years as a teacher before he quit to create music full-time. He had success playing across Nigeria & touring the DRC before the outbreak of the Nigerian Civil War in 1967. After the war ended, he assembled a band that he named the Philosophers National & they released their first album ‘True Philosophy’. According to this essay, Ukwu’s songs preached wisdom & philosophy often drawn from Igbo proverbs & aphorisms (the Nigerians might be the best proverbists in the world. The book to read is Chinua Achebe’s ‘Things Fall Apart’). His songs were often critical of materialism & rash behavior & another analysis of the man & his music focused on the social awareness & philosophical depth found in his lyrics. Celestine Ukwu released 7 albums before his death in a car accident at the age of 36. His only child was born 7 months after his untimely demise.
