Hello everyone,
Welcome to the 126th edition of Cannabinoids & the People, Lex Pelger’s free weekly digest of all the new cannabinoid science + assorted canna-news & psychedelic updates. Upgrade to a paid subscription here to support my work sharing canna-science. On the cannabinoids, ask me anything.
Editor’s note: new sponsor!
Two pieces of great news: I’m back on LinkedIn for reasons unknown + I’ve found a new project for me as well as a primary sponsor for this newsletter: the Cannabis and Health Research Initiative.
Run by Johns Hopkins & the Realm of Caring, this health project will pay people to talk about their use of cannabis to generate data (you can sign up to participate here & you’ll get $100 for ~2 hours of surveys over the next year & the satisfaction of adding to our knowledge of cannabis use in the real world). They have a searchable Research Library of 2500+ studies & you can also help out by showing love to their IG page.
My initial job will be writing their monthly newsletter & you can sign up for it here. It’ll contain the best of data from this newsletter as well as a focus on medical cannabis news. I’m aiming to make it useful & accessible for healthcare practitioners. And I plan to get creative about how to get people to sign up to participate in this study & if anyone knows any organizations who would want to help spread the word, I’m glad to talk with anyone who wants to help.
Also, I wanted to say many thanks to Denise C & Erik S for their generous donation in upgrading to a yearly paid subscription of this newsletter. If you’d like to support this newsletter for your end-of-the-year giving, you can subscribe here or donate at the links below.

I’ve got three recommendations for the canna-person in your life who likes graphic novels:
‘Brittle Joints’ by Maria Sweeney: This is one of the most convincing & well-done canna-graphic novels I’ve seen in my lifetime of collecting both graphic novels & writings of cannabis experiences. Born with a severe brittle bone disease, Maria illustrates her own book to tell the story of growing up with the challenges of easily broken bones & the transformative power of cannabis to help her with pain.
I’m going to do a video review of this book soon, but for now, you can see lots of highlights on her Instagram & I especially loved this page where I learned that you can roll your joints up with rose petals for a sweet smoke. Two thumbs up. A simply fantastic piece of work.
You can also support her Patreon page here.Love canna-science history? A fan of elephants? Hate the War on Drugs?
Then have we got a graphic novel for you, ‘The CROWN: Or; How to Shoot an Elephant’ from the graphic novel series ‘Anandamide, or; the Cannabinoid’. Starting in the 1860s, scientists started trying to isolate the active ingredient from cannabis. But it took until the 1940s for a cannabinoid’s structure to be fully solved. With elephants, writer & scientist Lex Pelger uses the metaphor of the blind men & the elephant to explain how we finally discovered the structure of cannabinol (CBN).
A visual feast of classic imagery arranged by the Peruvian illustrator & witch Wayra Sumacc, you can see a sample here & buy the book here.
(this link is Amazon.com but should be available in all markets)Love Queers? Believe in medical cannabis? Want to know how truly horrible Reagan was on AIDS & how truly spectacular for widening the Drug War to terrible proportions?
Then read ‘SUNset’, Lex Pelger’s history on how the AIDS crisis of the ‘80s sparked the birth of the medical cannabis movement in the US. Heroic activists, vicious local opposition & a big tribute to Kushner’s ‘Angels in America’, this is a heartbreaking story about dedicated activists like Brownie Mary who changed the world. See a sample here & buy the book here.

Associations of maternal peripregnancy cannabis use with behavioral and developmental outcomes in children with and without symptoms of autism spectrum disorder: Study to Explore Early Development
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39660543/
“Preconception-only cannabis use (versus no use) was associated with more aggressive behavior, emotional reactivity, and sleep problems in children with ASD symptoms, but not in children without ASD symptoms. Cannabis use during pregnancy was associated with increased attention and sleep problems in children with ASD symptoms; these associations did not differ significantly by ASD symptoms. Peripregnancy cannabis use was not associated with child developmental abilities regardless of ASD symptoms.”
For adolescent cannabis users & their academic achievement, a large meta-analysis of 63 studies covering 400k+ people found that “cannabis use during adolescence and young adulthood was probably associated with increases in school absenteeism and dropout; reduced likelihood of obtaining high academic grades, graduating high school, enrolling in university, and postsecondary degree attainment; and perhaps increased unemployment”
Cannabis Use During Adolescence and Young Adulthood and Academic Achievement: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39374005/
Of course, the question is always the chicken or the egg. Would these kids already have been low academic achievers because of the other things in their background that are also linked to early cannabis use? Or does cannabis make them more leery of the academic rat race? Or does it simply make them worse at school because of the memory & attention issues? As usual, it’s probably a mix of everything.
So will I encourage my teens to use grass? No. But will I hit the wall if they do? Also no.

“Studies have shown that CB1 receptors are pro-atherogenic while CB2 receptors exhibit anti-atherogenic properties. Activation of the ECS, especially under ischemic conditions, promotes CB1 expression and free radical production, which damages endothelial cells and accelerates the development of atherosclerosis. Inhibition of specific ECS receptors and enzymes has shown promise in reducing atherosclerosis complications, as evidenced by outcomes from major clinical trials”.

A thesis project on Finnish drug slang
FINNISH DRUG SLANG AND THE INFLUENCE OF ENGLISH ON ITS FORMATION
https://jyx.jyu.fi/bitstream/handle/123456789/98788/1/URN%3ANBN%3Afi%3Ajyu-202412047607.pdf
“Some of the terms are native to Finnish, such as poltto (burning), pilvi (cloud), pajari and paja, where the original meaning is unknown. While some terms are clearly influenced by the drug slang of the United States via calques and loan words. Examples of these are kukka, kukinto, nuppu (flower); dänkki (dank); savu, sauhu (smoke); nugetti (nugget); and ruoho (grass) (See example 1.). The influence of English is also present through anglicism, for example weedi (weed) is a clear example of this. Also, abbreviations are noticeable in the terms for cannabis, such as QQ/qq, referring to the word kukka (See example 1.), and mari, the clipped version of the word marijuana. American influence shows itself also in some humorous slang terms such as jazzi tupakka (jazz cigarette).”

https://karger.com/mca/article-pdf/doi/10.1159/000542929/4311290/000542929.pdf
“Key results were: 1. Multiple mentions of possible contamination for products from medical cannabis dispensaries reported by Florida program patients. 2. Patients sought second opinions when concerned about possible contamination and shared personal experiences as well as advice on what concerned patients should do if they believe they have contaminated products. 3. Some patients expressed feelings of anxiety and worry about health, safety, and quality control, while others that described possible product contamination did not express concern. 4. Patients wanted changes regarding vertical integration, company accountability, state oversight, and home grow law.”

PS: For this week’s chanteuse, the album ‘One Life to Live’ by Phyllis Dillon. The beloved singer of early reggae, this album includes Dillon’s originals as well as some lovely covers (I dig her versions of ‘Love the One You’re With’ & the Beatle’s ‘Something’). After growing up as a singer in rural Jamaica, she wrote her first hit, ‘Don’t Stay Away’ in 1966, a recording that has been described as "perhaps the finest female performance in Jamaican music”. With a string of hits & performances across the island, Dillon became “the Queen of Rocksteady” (rocksteady was a successor of ska with a slower beat & a precursor to reggae, named for the Alton Ellis song ‘Rocksteady’ which was originally written by Dillon as ‘It’s Rocking Time’). However, despite all of her work, she wasn’t making any money. She finally got sick of it & moved to New York City & started to raise her family. She used the vacation time from her bank job to go back to Jamaica to record more or to fly to London for shows, but she mostly concentrated on her family. In the ‘90s, she began a successful comeback career with dates across Germany, the UK & Japan but a diagnosis of breast cancer cut short this revitalization & she passed at the age of 59. Posthumously, Jamaica awarded Phyllis Dillon the Order of Distinction.
