PS: From the subtle jazz pianist Elmo Hope, his 1953 recordings that became the 1989 album ‘Trio And Quintet’. Not as well known as his famous friends Thelonious Monk & Bud Powell, Hope’s death at the age of 43 after the long use of heroin did not help the legacy of his music spread. Born in NYC to Caribbean immigrants, Hope was playing piano by the age of 7 & after being shot by a cop at the age of 17, he dedicated himself to music during his slow recovery. A childhood friend of Bud Powell at the famous music program of Benjamin Franklin High School, Hope met Thelonious Monk soon before he enlisted in World War II.
When Hope returned, he helped to nurse the growing rise of a new form of jazz called hard bop. However, his heroin habit began to interfere with his attendance of studio sessions & a drug conviction soon led to the withdrawal of his cabaret card (in NYC, this was a required license from the city to perform publicly where alcohol was being served & if it was withdrawn, your ability to make a living through your art basically vanished). He went out to Los Angeles for four years, but he found the jazz scene small & stultifying under the influence of church-style soul jazz. He came back to New York & played with some important musicians, but drug & personal health problems meant he played less often later in his career. At his last concert in New York City's Judson Hall in 1966, his fellow pianist Horace Tapscott reported Hope's "hands were all shot up and he couldn't play". Within the year, Elmo Hope was dead from pneumonia. He left behind 3 children & 75 musical compositions, but because of the complex difficulty of Hope’s style, these pieces were little taken up by later musicians. However, his career is being re-evaluated by jazz critics & musicians, with the tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin calling Hope "the real genius of the piano."
