Hello everyone,
Welcome to the 168th edition of Cannabinoids & the People, Lex Pelger’s free weekly digest of all the new cannabinoid science, assorted canna-news & coverage of psychedelics, the War on Drugs & harm reduction. Support this work sharing canna-science with a paid subscription here.
As always, ask me anything!
📌 Editor’s notes 📌:
Since I’m a drug writer at heart, you’ll notice more science coverage around here of ketamine, the cathinones, psychedelics, kava & kratom. They’re just so damn interesting…
I did not win an EmJay, but props to Rachelle Gordon who most certainly deserves her win for her canna-coverage at GreenState.
Thanks to friend of the newsletter Elizabeth Moriarty of Luminary Medicine for becoming a paid supporter of Cannabinoids & the People & for her Good Work of getting fine medicines out into the world. If you’d like to support this free canna-science newsletter as well, you can become a paid subscriber here.
And thanks to Belle Paniagua-Novak for buying me a coffee this week. It feels akin to the Alfréd Rényi quote , “A mathematician is a device for turning coffee into theorems.” Except I’m a machine for turning green tea & canna-science into content.

In my opinion, Brazil continues to lead the world in practical studies about how to actually use cannabis. While so many places flounder around killing mice & looking at single cannabinoids altering biochemical markers, the Brazilians are looking at the actual compositions of cannabis extracts that most help patients with complex conditions like chronic pain syndromes.

This always throws people, because in every survey on why people use CBD, insomnia is always in the top 3 reasons. But CBD isolate, especially at high doses, tends to wake people up & be alerting. My hypothesis is that at low doses, CBD may be helping some people with their anxiety around going to sleep, while for other people, what they’re actually doing is microdosing on the THC found in a full-spectrum hemp extract – and that’s very helpful for sleep.
But if anything is known about cannabinoids & sleep, it’s that everyone is different. Find what works for you!

“Most participants obtained cannabis from coffeeshops, although one in four also reported home cultivation as a source. Participants typically smoked cannabis with tobacco, reported (near-)daily use for therapeutic purposes, and indicated a monthly expenditure of €100. The majority was not aware of the THC and CBD content of their products. Perceived effectiveness was rated as high, and more than half of those with a history of prescription medication use reported substituting cannabis for these medications.”

(for you neuro-nerds)
In sensory neurons, the minor cannabinoids caused a variety of effects
Minor Cannabinoids CBD, CBG, CBN and CBC differentially modulate sensory neuron activation
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41256665/
“Individually, CBD, CBG and CBC directed greater response magnitudes when compared to CBN. All four minor cannabinoids activated overlapping but distinct size populations of sensory neurons. CBD and CBG activated the widest range of DRG [dorsal root ganglions are neuron clusters in the spinal nerve that intake sensory stimuli such as pain, touch & temperature] neuron sizes (smaller-larger) overlapping with smaller capsaicin-sensitive neurons. In contrast, CBN and CBC activated predominantly larger sensory neurons. CBD diverged from other minor cannabinoids in directing a linear dose-response profile whereas CBG and CBC directed sigmoidal dose-response profiles and CBN activated DRG neurons with an inverted U-shaped dose-response relationship. CBD-induced activation of DRG neurons was dependent on co-expression of the nociceptive channel TRPV1 plus cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1R), whereas CBN-induced activation was independent of TRPV1.”

📰 US Headlines & Fav Articles 📰
I don’t usually bother with rumors, but it looks like cannabis may be getting rescheduled in the US from Schedule I (like heroin) to Schedule III (like ketamine)
https://www.marijuanamoment.net/trump-may-be-about-to-announce-hes-reclassifying-marijuana-opponents-warn-as-white-house-denies-rumors/
However, as we often point out around here, this changes little except taxes & bankruptcies. It won’t matter much in criminal cases because for trafficking, the penalties are mandatory minimums already present in the Controlled Substances Act & for possession, those charges are usually brought at the state & local level, rarely the federal level. Rescheduling also will not affect prior convictions or cause expungements of records. All of the federal restrictions on benefits, employment & gun ownership will be unchanged. It will matter little for access to banking services (according to the Congressional Research Service). It won’t really alter cannabis research, though it will be easier to register your studies through the DEA. All of the state medical & adult-use cannabis programs will remain federally illegal, just that they will be Schedule III illegal instead of Schedule I illegal. And most importantly, for the patients, accepted medical use for cannabis will only be through the long & rigorous FDA approval & prescription process, and that agency is not keen on botanical products like cannabis flower because they are hard to standardize.
The main benefit is finally ending the terrible drag of the 280E tax burden where canna-businesses couldn’t make regular deductions because their product was in Schedule I or II, but even that will be complex (according to CohnReznick LLP). Look at ketamine. It’s Schedule III & you still get in trouble for using it without a prescription & it’s still hard for a business to work with it.
While rescheduling will be a boon for businesses, overall, this should have been done by Jimmy Carter in the Swinging ‘70s & not Donald Trump in the Roarin’ ‘20s.
In Massachusetts, the first rules for cannabis social clubs have been approved in New England

The importance of this right to gather goes back to Dennis Peron & the AIDS activists who said that we should have the right to grow it, sell it & consume it together. See my graphic novel about this time in canna-history.
In Minnesota, cannabis is legal, but thousands of people are being prosecuted for having cannabis in their car because it’s not in the trunk or sealed in the original packaging

https://spectrumnews1.com/ky/louisville/news/2025/12/05/parolee-forced-to-quit-his-job-after-months-on-the-job
Relatedly, the story behind this brand was that co-founder James Higdon was in the original ‘Cornbread Mafia’, an infamous group of Kentucky weed bootleggers in the ‘80s with a swaggering book on the subject.
So while this headline sounds pretty bad, if I was a parole officer who had a parolee working under a famous & unrepentant local criminal, I too might pause.

Fun Fakt: the oldest surviving piece of paper is from China, 2,000 years ago. “This paper and similar bits of paper surviving from the next century are thick, coarse and uneven in their texture. They are all made of pounded and disintegrated hemp fibers. From the drying marks on them, it is evident that they were dried primitively on mats woven as pieces of fabric [also likely hemp].”

I am deadly serious. Listening to the Shakespearean actor Frank Muller reading Moby Dick was one of the peak experiences of my life (literary & otherwise). In this essay on Moby Dick through the lens of the UN’s Sustainable Development goal #14 ‘Life Below Water’, the authors remind us that what stopped Captain Ahab & ended his mad quest was… hemp
Captain Ahab’s downfall, as a Violator of SDG 14, Reveals Moby Dick as an Embodiment of Nature’s Vengeance and a Foreshadowing of Humanity’s Potential Fate
https://repository.rmutr.ac.th/bitstream/handle/123456789/1679/rmutrcon2025_33.pdf
Remember, that if you view the book through the lens of CLR James in ‘Mariners, Renegades, and Castaways’, Captain Ahab is a symbol of Amerikan imperialism. Funded by pious yet mercantile Quakers, men of color led by white officers are sent out on long, dangerous missions to kill whales in a bloody maelstrom & melt them down into a luxurious oil for lighting the homes of the rich while sailing in a ship named after a decimated Native American tribe. And Ahab wants to destroy the one creature that dared to strike back at him, the White Whale that took his leg. But in the end, it was the hemp rope of our beloved cannabis that the whale finally used to (perhaps) pull Ahab down to his destruction.

I only met Peter on a few occasions, but it always impressed me that even when he was dealing with a low-level figure like me, he was always the height of grace & affability. I always saw him at the conferences sharing his wisdom from the stage & you could see his work online of legitimizing cannabis to the German public, leading to Germany now being one of the forefront cannabis countries in the world.
Thank you Peter for your Work. You will be missed.

“If the U.S. military brings the survivors to the Navy-run prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, lawyers defending them could file a habeas corpus lawsuit in U.S. federal court questioning whether there really is an armed conflict, for legal purposes, between the United States and cartels. https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2025/12/11/2025-22495/schedules-of-controlled-substances-placement-of-cumyl-pegaclone-in-schedule-i
Not exactly sure why this one got to the top of the list. A German study of synthetic cannabinoid harms referred to it as “the relatively ‘insignificant’ harmful effects of Cumyl-PEGACLONE”. And then they refer to a paper with this title: ‘Cumyl-PEGACLONE: A comparatively safe new synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonist entering the NPS market?’. Though there is this Australian case series with 3 of the fatalities where “the presence of Cumyl-PEGACLONE was considered to be highly significant”. But overall, I didn’t see anything about it being widely used in the US.

PS: For today’s album of female-led proto-rock, “Wild, Wild Women!” with Ruth Brown & LaVern Baker, a compilation album of two of the greatest stars of Atlantic Records in the 1950s. LaVern Baker was vaulted to stardom by the first track ‘Jim Dandy’ & a few other Top Ten R&B hits. Meanwhile, with Ruth Brown, they started called Atlantic Records “the house that Ruth built”. She was a hit maker through the whole decade & led to the label’s predominance in the R&B field. Both women later moved into TV & film (with Brown playing Motormouth Maybelle Stubbs in Hairspray), but then left the limelight for some decades before having resurgences near the end of their lives. Both were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as heroes of the early women of rock & R&B.
