Hello everyone,
Welcome to the 170th edition of Cannabinoids & the People, Lex Pelger’s free weekly digest of all the new cannabinoid science, assorted canna-news as well as coverage of other psychoactives, the War on Drugs & harm reduction. Support this work with a paid subscription or by buying me a coffee.
For producing cannabinoid content, work with my company White Whale Creations: writing, science archives, social media, newsletters & podcasts (especially podcasts).
As always, ask me anything!
📌 Editor’s notes 📌:
1. Glad to welcome ICBC as our first new sponsor of 2026. See below on why they’re close to my heart & how you can save 25%.
2. I reorganized the top of this newsletter for the new year & added a new subtitle to reflect its widened scope: Drugs & Drug Wars.
Also, inspired by the channel Bistro Huddy, I’m going to start donating all profits from my books sales to Americans for Safe Access. When the pigs are at the trough & the laws are badly written, ASA is there to stand up for the rights of the medical cannabis patients who often get lost in the roar of liberalization. You can donate directly here.
🤝 Sponsor 🤝: ICBC 2026!
I’m proud to be a new media partner of the International Cannabis Business Conference 2026. With 5,000+ people coming from 80+ countries, it’s one of the best reasons for your canna-business travel this year. And if you want to get the very best deal possible, the early bird tickets end on Jan 28th & on top of that, I can get you an extra 25% off with this coupon code: WhiteWhale25
Buy your tickets here:

Also, Alex Rogers who runs it is a cool guy. Just check out this rap video he did recapping cannabis in 2025. And that’s part of what makes this conference excellent. Alex makes it not just about the business during the day but always has great parties at night & places for people to connect with each other on a human level.
As someone who’s only been in Europe a couple of years now, I’ve found ICBC to be my best gateway into meeting both friends & business connections in the cannabis world. In fact, check out the homepage: that’s me & my (now) buddy Hirsh Jain just to the left of the B in business. I put my likeness where my mouth is.
This is a great conference. Come join me there.

🧬 Sleep 🧬
If I have one evergreen piece of advice, it’s that the cannabinoids affect everyone’s asleep differently. The only way to find out what works for you is by self-experimentation. Start with CBD, move on to THC & do not forget to try oleamide (the endocannabinoid of sleep induction).
In the sleep of chronic cannabis users, they had higher waking after sleep onset, lower sleep efficiency & lower total sleeping time

🧬 Genes & Greens 🧬
In people with schizophrenia & heavy cannabis use, a genetic analysis found that while genetic tendencies for both cannabis use disorder & schizophrenia were associated with heavy cannabis use, the contribution from the schizophrenia genetic tendencies were only very modest, while in people with a genetic tendency towards cannabis use disorder, there was an association with schizophrenia (my video here)

“Polygenic liability to CUD was associated with SCZ in individuals without a documented history of cannabis use, suggesting widespread pleiotropy.”
As in, people with schizophrenia tend already have a baked in genetic tendency towards also having cannabis use disorder.
In people with cannabis use disorder, an epigenetic study of the methylation (turning off of a gene) found their dopamine-promoting regions associated with personality dimensions as well as cannabis use disorder linked to higher neuroticism, anxiety & openness plus lower agreeableness & conscientiousness

Across 105 tissue types, a comparative analysis of how THC & CBD altered genetic transcription
Comparative analysis of 105 datasets across species and tissues reveals differential transcriptomic responses to cannabinoids THC and CBD
https://link.springer.com/article/10.1186/s42238-025-00361-0
“CBD datasets clustered more tightly by route of administration and species and were more frequently enriched for pathways related to zinc homeostasis, inflammation suppression, and cell cycle regulation. In contrast, THC signatures were more heterogeneous and did not exhibit consistent clustering, although consistently altered genes associated with antioxidant activity, neuronal myelination, synaptic signaling, and transcriptional regulation were identified across datasets. THC altered endocannabinoid signaling genes more often in brain tissues, while CBD affected this pathway more heavily in both central and peripheral tissues. Disease enrichment analyses revealed significant associations of CBD DEGs with lipid metabolism and body composition traits, while DEGs of both compounds showed links to neuropsychiatric disorders and type 2 diabetes.”

“In a paper from 2016, lawyer Kevin Lerman points out that drug mules are “pawns of the drug conspiracies” representing the lowest rung of the narcotics trade. Similarly, writes University of London professor Jennifer Fleetwood, couriers are the “most powerless and most exploited in the international drug trade,” typically snared into the web of the cartels by poverty, debt or coerced into collusion. If caught, cartel bosses will vigorously disown them and not waste a penny on their legal defence. These readily replaceable mules now fill US prisons while narco lords and their financial kingpins, with few exceptions, have faced little or no repercussions. The fragmented evidence on the profiles of the mules now being blown apart by US military power largely echoes this depiction: fisherman and migrants from coastal regions of Venezuela struggling in poverty with few alternatives to provide for their families…
Alessandro Manzoni’s novel, The Beloved, offers a powerful meditation on the plight of those caught in the crosshairs of such as system: “the law was like a net spread to catch the little birds, while the great ones broke through it and flew away… the poor were punished for trifles, while the rich committed crimes with impunity.” His words still resonate in our time.”
Relatedly, just last month I happened to listen to Manzoni’s supremely excellent book aka as ‘The Betrothed’ & made a video about it (as well as an I Ching quote book). It’s a 200-year-old book that’s sometimes called the ‘War & Peace’ of Italy & its meditations on power & personalities perfectly maps on to today’s drug wars & who gets ground under the boot.
Oh, and the plague comes back in that one too. Very modern.

“IN symptoms were directly associated with cannabis-related occupational/academic consequences, self-care consequences, and blackouts/memory impairment, independent of quantity of cannabis consumption. HI symptoms showed positive indirect associations with physical dependence, impaired control, and CUD [cannabis use disorder] through greater amount of cannabis used. Conversely, IN symptoms had negative indirect associations with these outcomes, mediated by amount of cannabis used.”

PS: For this week’s Texas blues, the 1927 album ‘Presenting Henry Thomas’. An itinerant street musician also known as Ragtime Texas, Thomas is widely viewed as the earliest Black folk artist of the US to produce a significant body of recordings. His 24 songs bridged the 19th & 20th centuries with their mix of spiritual ballads, reels, dance songs & blues. As you can hear on the first track, he would also sometimes simultaneously play the pan pipes (you’ll recognize the hook from “Going up the Country” by Canned Heat, which they blew up at Woodstock). Though he returned to obscurity in the ‘30s with nothing known of his later life, the music of Henry Thomas was a key part of the folk music revival of the early 1960s. Harry Smith included two of Thomas’ songs on his legendary 1952 ‘Anthology Of American Folk Music’, leading to covers by Bob Dylan, the Lovin’ Spoonful, Taj Mahal, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band & the Grateful Dead.
