PS: For this week’s early jazz guitar maestro, the album ‘Presenting Eddie Lang’. Born in Philadelphia, Lang grew up playing the violin & banjo before finally settling on the guitar when he joined the Mound City Blue Blowers. With them in 1924, he recorded one of the first guitar solos of all time on ‘Deep 2nd Street Blues’. Previously, the guitar was not a prominent instrument in jazz bands or dance orchestras, but with his ability to play sophisticated chords as an accompaniment or lovely single-note solos, Lang drew more prestige to the instrument. With his skills much admired, he played with many of the greats of the 1920s, including Bix Beiderbecke, most notably on their song ‘Singin The Blues’ which the Library of Congress placed in the National Recording Registry. He became friends with Bing Crosby during the filming of the movie ‘King of Jazz’, where you can see Lang playing with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra. As Crosby ventured into radio, he insisted on Lang playing accompaniment & sharing his microphone. Eddie Lang’s career was looking bright when he entered the hospital to finally get his tonsils removed after years of problems, but he never woke up from the surgery. He was only 30 years old & jazz lost a shining star that day.
PPS: A rare content warning, but if you’re listening to this at work, beware when anything comes on by Bessie Smith. She didn’t even try to disguise what it was that she was talking about.
