PS: For today’s jazz organ, “Brother” Jack McDuff’s ‘The Prestige Years’. Born in Illinois, McDuff began teaching himself the organ & the piano in the mid-‘50s. He came to the attention of the iconic Prestige Records & cut his first album for them in 1960. He soon formed his own band & things really took off when he hired the young but now famous guitarist George Benson, giving him his first big break. With his Hammond B-3 organ, McDuff was known for “rock-solid basslines and blues-drenched solos… balanced by clever, almost pianistic melodies”. He recorded 20+ albums with Prestige, including his biggest hit “Rock Candy” & then continued recording with Atlantic, Cadet & Blue Note across the ’60s & ’70s. As public interest in jazz waned, McDuff explored fusion & electronic keyboards. Even as his health faltered in the ‘90s, he never stopped exploring new styles & he still released 8 albums for Concord Jazz Records. In 2001, Brother Jack went to the great Sit-In in the Sky.
